As a lot of you already know I am into my first mountain bike racing season. I have decided to meld my love of biking with a higher purpose. I have chosen to support my new favorite do-gooder organization... Hot Meals International.
I am doing this by using the biggest endurance race event we have this season to raise money. I will be racing in the Ultra Endurance event, Lumberjack 100, June 14th in Manistee, Michigan. I will be racing 100 miles through dense Manistee National Forest single track.
My goal is to raise $15,000 by the date of the race. Sister Mary Beth Lloyd has promised a free copy of her new book, Aids Orphans Rising to anyone who donates $15 or more.

Since 2001, the Sisters have raised money through the amazing athletic accomplishments of Marshall Ulrich and Lisa Smith-Batchen to support and fuel their fundraising efforts. Lisa introduced Marshall to the Religious Teachers Filippini, and she is always a driving force behind their efforts to support the Sisters. Of course, all of the wonderful work being completed by the Sisters is only possible due to the generous and sacrificial spirit of donors like you!
In 2001, Marshall ran the 584-mile Badwater Quad, with the support of Lisa and many others, which helped the Sisters to raise over $70,000 for the women and children of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
In 2004, Marshall climbed Mount Everest and Mount Elbrus (two of the Seven Summits) as fundraisers for the Sisters. This followed Lisa becoming (in 2003) the first woman to complete the Grand Slam of Ultra Running (four 100-mile races) and Badwater in the same year. Their combined efforts helped the Sisters to raise over $90,000 for the women and children of Ethiopia and Eritrea in 2004.
In 2005, Marshall completed the Seven Summits and his Journey 2 Extremes (at least one of the Seven Summits and Badwater each year in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005) which helped the Sisters raise more than $100,000, much of which went to build a health center in the Muslim village of Hamelmalo, Eritrea. Marshall also completed the 150-mile Sahara race as a fundraiser for the Sisters, helped to start a quilting program is Asmara, Eritrea and was honored to visit the mission sites in Eritrea, including the health center in Hamelmalo, in 2005.
In 2006, Lisa completed her +300-mile Badwater Double, with the support of Marshall and many others, as a fundraiser for the Sisters. This followed Marshall's guided climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa through his Stray Dog Adventure Travel with a Purpose program where all of the profits from his adventure trips are donated to the Sisters. Their combined efforts helped the Sisters to raise more than $294,000 for Child Headed Households in Africa. |
